The park is located a smidge North of Lahaina, Hi. After last year’s wildfires, the West Maui and Lahaina communities have pulled together with help from some friends on the mainland. They are working together to “create a space for all to ride, progress, and fall in love with this amazing location.” Just like the pros who built the park did.

Garmin Prize Bundle

Garmin Edge 1050 Computer HRM and cadence sensors

One lucky grand prize winner will receive these Garmin goods:

  • Garmin Edge 1050 GPS Computer
  • Garmin Cadence + Speed Sensor Bundle
  • Garmin HRM Pro Plus
  • Garmin Edge Out-Front Mount

Garmin Edge 1050 GPS Computer: The premium Garmin Edge 1050 cycling computer has a vivid color touchscreen display of detailed maps and stats. The battery lasts up to 20 hours in the most demanding use cases and up to 60 hours in battery saver mode.

When paired with your smartphone through the Garmin Connect app, the computer will provide alerts for road hazards reported by fellow cyclists, and for group rides, see in-ride messaging, leaderboards, and more. For improving your performance, the Edge 1050 works with free Garmin training plans for cyclists including event adaptive training with personalized workouts based on your performance and recovery. A built-in speaker provides workout and navigation prompts plus a bike bell so you can alert riders and pedestrians. Lastly, the cycling computer includes Garmin Pay contactless payments in case you leave a credit card at home.

Garmin Cadence + Speed Sensor Bundle: These easy-to-install wireless sensors help you monitor and record your cadence and speed during rides. There are no magnets or exposed parts to line up, so it’s easy to swap these between bikes.

The Speed Sensor 2 attaches to the hub of either wheel and self-calibrates with your Edge cycling computer for accurate speed and distance data, even without a head unit. The Cadence Sensor 2 fastens to any size crank arm and measures pedal strokes per minute so you can get the most out of your training. With both sensors on your bike, you can send live speed, distance, and cadence data to compatible training apps or displays by using ANT+ connectivity and Bluetooth.

Garmin HRM Pro Plus: Garmin’s most advanced heart rate monitor to date, the HRM-Pro Plus is designed to give you accurate heart rate readings for any activity or exercise within your workout regime — because you cross-train, right? It transmits data via ANT+ and Bluetooth and is compatible with fitness equipment, the Tacx Training app, and more.

Garmin Edge Out-Front Mount: This replacement mount holds newer Garmin computers in a more low-profile position so it’s directly in line with the handlebars for a sleek look. It also has a Quarter-Turn mount on the lower side, accepting the Varia headlights or the Charge Power Pack.

BikeTiresDirect, 3T, and Watt Wagon have partnered to give away a brand new 3T Exploro Ultra — in the oh-so-tasty coffee colorway — fully kitted out with SRAM AXS components!

Throw your hat in the ring for a chance to be the lucky grand prize winner who walks away with this ultra-capable gravel steed. In addition to the grand prize, nine other winners will receive a $50 BTD gift certificate. The deadline for entering is Sept. 2, 2024, and winners will be contacted that week. The contest is open to US & Canada only this time around, apologies to our friends in other countries!

The Grand Prize 3T Exploro Ultra

Get to the worst roads fast with the aero frame & road-inspired riding position of the 3T Exploro Ultra Gravel Bike. Many riders these days love riding in rough terrain but live in a more urban jungle. So you need a bike that’s fast on the road and capable off-road. Keep your grip with massive tires and go for a standard round, dropper, or suspension post inside the Ultra’s aero seat tube. Add a few packs and the Ultra will be ready for epic overnight adventures.

Detail image of the seat tube of a 3T Exploro Ultra gravel bike.
3T says the Exploro Ultra stands as the brand’s most extreme bike; (Photo/BikeTiresDirect)

The Ultra is 3T’s most extreme bike. Starting with 55-61mm wide 650b tires, they then designed the whole aero package around those to keep the on-road speed high. If you ride on less extreme terrain, you can also fit 700c tires up to 45mm WAM (Width As Measured).

The Ultra was 3T’s most difficult aerodynamic challenge to date: starting with massive 55-61mm tires and then making the bike aero. There’s nothing to be done about the tires, they’re big and the knobs don’t help. What can be done is to take the airflow mess that comes off the front wheel and try to catch and redirect it. That’s why you will see the 60mm wide downtube placed closely behind the front wheel, going even wider as it gets closer to the bottom bracket.

Detail image of the front profile of a 3T Exploro Ultra gravel bike.

Blending this into the headtube with an off-center aero profile along with loads of other tricks gives you a bike that feels so much faster than your brain can compute. And thanks to the aggressive riding position, the aerodynamics, the bottom bracket stiffness, and the narrow Q-factor, the Ultra actually feels 100% like a road bike when you want to go fast, even when muddy.

Does this sound like a bike you need to have? Maybe you just want it. What are you waiting for?

More about the partners

BTD has been selling 3T bikes and sponsoring Watt Wagon (aka Cynthia Carson) for nearly a year now, and the company is looking forward to what the years ahead hold. In part, this giveaway is a celebration of their approaching anniversary with both parties. For those who might not be familiar, here’s a brief introduction to everyone involved:

BikeTiresDirect

BikeTiresDirect is an online retailer based out of Portland, Oregon, and home to the world’s best selection of bicycle tires, plus tons of bikes, frames, components, and other cycling gear.

They have humble roots as a cycling club selling excess tires on eBay back in 2002, and have evolved over the past 20+ years to not only have one of the very best selections of tires in the US, but an excellent selection of products across all cycling-related categories.

The BTD customer service team is at the heart of their business. With decades of bike shop sales and mechanic experience, the team is made of diehard cyclists with a knack for connecting customers to exactly the right product. Additionally, everyone on staff, across all departments, believes in bicycles as a force for good in the world.

3T Bikes

3T makes absolutely stunning bicycles. The brand, formerly known as Tecno Tubo Torino, got its start as a premier handlebar manufacturer in Italy in 1961. The lightweight, durable, and aesthetically pleasing components gained popularity among Italian professional riders before sweeping across the peloton, and before long 3T was developing stems, forks, and other bicycle components. A landmark success was achieved with the setting of the hour record in 1984 on their “Aerodinamica” bars. Their focus on research and development with continuing innovation led them into lighter and stronger steels, aluminum alloys, and eventually carbon fiber.

The modern 3T was born in 2015 with the arrival of Cervelo co-founder Gerard Vroomen as co-owner and head of design. And in 2016 they debuted their first bike, the Exploro, a carbon gravel bike designed not only to be as aerodynamic as possible, but also rugged and capable of taking its rider anywhere.

Today the Exploro and its variants are the heart of 3T’s lineup, offering uncompromising designs for the way you gravel.

Cynthia Carson / Watt Waggon

Cynthia Carson is an Ultra Endurance Cyclist whose journey into the world of Ultra Cycling began in 2021 with first place at Rockstar Gravel 250 followed by a fourth place at Unbound XL. Since then, Cynthia has found herself in the top step at some of the biggest ultras in the world including Unbound XL, Badlands, Across Andes, Atlas Mountain Race, GranGuanche Gravel, Transcordilleras, and Memory Bike Adventure.

Favero Assioma Power Meter Pedals

Favero Assioma Power Meter Pedals pro and duro models

Favero Assioma DUO Double-Sided Power Meter Pedals are designed for high-performance road training sessions and are LOOK Keo cleat compatible. Each pedal has a power sensor to provide instantaneous Angular Velocity (REAL) data instead of an average velocity. That’s because of the exclusive IAV Power system tech and an integrated gyroscope used for its data. The power meter pedals also incorporate the temperature and weather conditions when measuring watts.

The pedals connect via Bluetooth and ANT+ providing up to 50 hours of pedaling before recharging. These are Favero’s lightest and most compact pedal-based power meters, which are waterproof and shock-resistant.

The Favero Assioma PRO MX-2 Power Meter Pedals are made for MTB and gravel rides and are SPD-compatible. They have integrated rechargeable batteries that last 60+ hours on a single charge and connect via Bluetooth or ANT+ to be compatible with most apps, watches, and cycling computers.

The pedal body is 6061-T6 aluminum so it’s both light and sturdy when you take on all kinds of trails. Like other pedals, these can be swapped to other bikes.

So how do you win a pair? Answer the questions below for your chance!

For 2024, the Builders for Builders Fundraiser is back to benefit the Sierra Butte Trail Stewardship (SBTS). So far the Builders for Builders program has raised over $100,000 to date. The proceeds from the fundraising campaign go back to the Stewardship to support more trails in the Lost Sierra.

Between now and July 2nd, for every donation made of at least $10, there is a chance to win a custom frame handcrafted by one of the following frame builders.

The winner will select the fabricator of their choice for the frame, choosing from the list above. That frame will then get custom painted. After which it will then get built with high-end componentry from Paul Components, White Industries, and WTB.

Connected Communities

“The funds will specifically support Connected Communities, SBTS’ plan to connect 15 mountain towns via a 564-mile multi-use singletrack trail. Once completed, these sections of singletrack can be linked with a vast network of existing paved and gravel doubletrack to create a plethora of gravel-bike-friendly bikepacking routes in the Lost Sierra, that dip in and out of local towns for resupply, restaurant, and lodging options.

We recently released the 68-page Trails Master Plan for the project, which outlines the proposed trail, dubbed The Lost Sierra Route, as well as plans to incorporate building techniques to create Fire Hardened Trails to manage vegetation for wildfire mitigation. Connected Communities trail projects are already in the works, but completing the entire project will require a heavy financial lift.

Dollars raised through fundraisers such as Builders for Builders are vital, as they bring in unrestricted funds or funds that don’t require a costly match or significant staff resources to manage, as is customary with government grants”.

Gates – maker of cycling’s leading belt-drive system – is offering a 100,000€ prize to the first elite man or woman to win a single round of the UCI Mountain Bike Downhill World Cup on a bike with a Gates belt-drive. It’s only actually been UCI-legal since last season, and Gamux Factory Racing dropped in on a Gates Carbon belt-drive Pinion gearbox prototype bike last spring. So get out there and race the Gamux crew on a belt-drive bike and win a bunch of bonus cash!

Get 100,000€ Bonus for UCI DH win on Gates belt-drive bike!

That’s right, all you need to do to get a 100,00€ bonus is win a DH World Cup on a Gates-equipped bike. Just rock up to the start line and lay down the fastest time against the best mountain bikers in the world, on a bike that’s not yet even made it onto the podium.

It may not have been done yet. But a belt-drive makes a lot of sense for racing DH.

(Photo/Gamux)

No derailleur flapping around waiting to get bashed off by some passing rock. Maybe a gearbox in the middle of the bike for better weight distribution and more ability to tune suspension around its sprung weight. Gamux has known that for years, and you could already buy the chain-drive Sego since 2021. But now the Gates Carbon drive prototype that we spotted last season, is officially in their line-up – as the 2024 Sego!

And your reward would be 26x what the last World Cup winner earned. Yep, the prize money for winning an elite UCI DH World Cup race is just 3750€ again this season. Sounds like a pretty good motivation

You just better do it fast if you want to beat those Gamux Factory Racing kids. They’ve already got a good head start!

One nice bit of extra info, Gates isn’t in a giant hurry it seems. Their €100K bonus prize will roll over to next season, if no one wins it this year!

Gates to Award 100K Euros to the First World Cup Mountain Bike Downhill Win on a Gates Belt-Driven Bike

Read the full wording of their “contest” below:

DENVER, April 12, 2024 – Gates (NYSE: GTES), a global provider of innovative highly engineered power transmission and fluid power solutions – and pioneer in belt-driven micromobility – has raised the stakes for mountain bike racers around the world. Gates announced a massive €100,000 belted purse for the first elite racer to win a Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Mountain Bike Downhill race on a Gates belt-driven bike.

This Gates Belted Purse Prize, which will roll over if not claimed this season, is intended to inspire teams and athletes to consider the unique performance advantages a belted downhill bike offers.

“With the advancements Gates has achieved through materials science and engineering innovation, the time has come to make history,” said Chris Sugai, General Manager, Gates Global Mobility. “Gates intends to show that the benefits of belt drives and advanced gearing solutions are applicable at the highest levels of mountain bike racing. And along with sport fans around the world, we’re eager for the 2024 UCI downhill races as the Gates Carbon Drive Prize adds to the excitement.”

Using a belt drive in conjunction with a gearbox on a mountain bike offers several key advantages. A rider has greater control, improved balance, and better handling due to lower unsprung mass in the rear wheel and concentration of mass in the center of the bike. Unsprung mass refers to the weight of components that are not supported by the suspension system, such as wheels, tires, and drivetrain. Reducing the unsprung mass of the rear wheel allows for more control and less rebound forces when riding. Navigating tight corners and technical sections are improvements enabled by this radically different drivetrain configuration.

Another benefit of a belt drive mountain bike is reduced risk of malfunctions versus a traditional chain system. Chains are prone to stretching, derailleurs are often damaged, and cassettes can clog with dirt and debris which can lead to poor performance and frequent mechanical issues. Gates Carbon Drive belts are made from highly durable materials that are resistant to stretching and corrosion, and importantly have no weak link.

Downhill racing has always been an adrenaline-fueled sport that pushes athletes and bicycle technology to their limits. Skill, courage, and determination are critical for success, and technical improvements to the bike can lead to race-winning seconds off the clock. With the Gates Carbon Drive €100K Prize, we’re about to see history in the making. It’s going to be a great season.

It’s that time of year again, the Sea Otter Classic is upon us. For many, it’s not only an exciting time to get together and celebrate the bicycle, but it’s also an exciting time to see what Paul Components brewed up for Sierra Nevada Brewing and the annual custom, one-off bike offering.

(Photos/Paul Components)

For the 7th year in a row, Sierra Nevada Brewery has asked Paul Components to bring a custom bike to the Sea Otter. They then give away this bike to raise money for a non-profit. And these bikes are like no other bike at the show, or that you’ve ever seen. Each year brings a bicycle with a high level of customization, creativity, and uniqueness.

And this year’s bike offering is no different!

Celebrate and Elevate Diversity in Mountain Biking

This year we wanted to help create a space at Sea Otter to focus on all the badass women in the cycling scene, and Sierra Nevada said, “YES, let’s do that!” So we’ve partnered up with The Roam Collective, who will be doing a takeover at the Sierra Nevada Beer Garden during the event. They’ll be hosting some rad inclusivity panels, Shredtalks, and meetups. Then, we’ll be giving this bike away to a lucky winner as a way to raise money and awareness for Roam“.

Refusing to bring a boring bike to Sea Otter, Paul Components continues to not disappoint with this collaboration. It’s a beautifully weird and wonderful, curvy titanium frame made by B Vivit of HotSalad Bicycles.

You might remember when I mentioned B and HotSalad Bicycles in my coverage of the 2022 Philly Bike Expo. B was the winner of the Philly Bike Expo/SRAM Inclusivity Scholarship. And it was at the Expo where she displayed a very creative take on a titanium Klunker.

The bike that she built for this year’s Paul/Sierra bike is a modern tribute to “mountain biking’s original dirt crusher and advocate for women in cycling, Jacquie Phelan, and her historic bike, “Otto”.

This Year’s Bike

This bike looks pretty amazing. It’s a cool blend of old-school and new, cutting-edge technology. It’s not only a custom titanium frame, but it’s decked out with a SRAM Electronic Transmission, drop bars, cloth handlebar tape, and a vintage Hite-Rite saddle dropper.

The real hero of the bike set-up is the swoopy and curvy titanium frame with gorgeous, custom anodizing that B put together.

Scott Spark RC x Cape Epic custom XC Marathon race bike for Nino Schurter & WBR raffle, riding dirty

The season-opening Cape Epic kicked off marathon cross-country racing over the weekend, and we’re suckers for the custom XC bikes that the 2-person duos show up on. This year is the 20th anniversary of the iconic South African race, and there are plenty of custom paint jobs marking that milestone. XC legend Nino Schurter is racing a custom-painted Scott Spark RC.

You can’t simply go buy his bike. But Scott-SRAM put an exact replica up for auction to benefit World Bicycle Relief…

At the Absa Cape Epic, Nino Schurter of Scott-SRAM has paired up with friend Sebastian Fini of Lapierre-Mavic Unity – under the combined banner of World Bicycle Relief. “As South Africa is Nino’s favorite place to prepare for the race season, it was clear that the bike had to show the special connection to the country for his attempt to win the Cape Epic for a third time.

For his race bike, Nino’s 120mm Spark RC features “a unique design inspired by the South African national colors and a highly optimized setup for the rugged South African landscape, equipped with the all-new RockShox Flight Attendant XC suspension system”.

The bike is set up a bit differently than his usual World Cup race bikes, due to the tougher race environment, and the need to be self-sufficient day-after-day. “No Yanick the Mechanic nearby“.
